SIMATIC STEP 7 is Siemens’ flagship engineering software from the classic generation of Totally Integrated Automation (TIA) tools, designed for programming and configuring the S7-300 and S7-400 PLC families.
Unlike the newer TIA Portal, which integrates multiple platforms under a unified interface, STEP 7 focuses on providing a stable, dedicated, and performance-oriented environment for traditional control systems that remain widely used in industrial applications around the world.

It is often referred to as “STEP 7 Classic”, and it continues to be essential in maintaining and upgrading legacy automation systems, especially in factories, power plants, refineries, and large-scale process industries.

Evolution and Purpose

Before TIA Portal became the standard engineering platform, Siemens engineers relied entirely on STEP 7 and its supporting tools such as WinCC Flexible and S7-PLCSIM for logic simulation.
The latest release represents the final and most refined version of the classic line, supporting Windows 10-11 Professional (64-bit) and offering better stability, license handling, and compatibility with modern PCs.

This version bridges the gap between old-generation hardware (S7-300/400) and modern Windows environments, ensuring engineers can continue developing, maintaining, and troubleshooting existing installations without migrating everything to TIA Portal.

Core Capabilities of STEP 7

STEP 7  is a fully-featured engineering suite that covers all essential PLC programming tasks. Its modular and hierarchical project structure enables engineers to manage complex automation systems efficiently.
Key functions include:

  • Hardware Configuration (HW Config):
Used to set up the CPU, I/O modules (SM, FM, CP), and communication networks such as PROFIBUS and PROFINET.
  • Symbol Management:
Centralized creation of symbolic names for tags and variables used throughout the project.
  • Program Editor:
    Supports multiple programming languages:
    • LAD (Ladder Diagram)
    • FBD (Function Block Diagram)
    • STL (Statement List)
  • Optional Languages:
Engineers can integrate SCL (Structured Control Language) for complex arithmetic or data handling and GRAPH for sequential control programming.
  • Diagnostics & Monitoring:
Real-time online monitoring, force tables, watch tables, and cross-reference tools make debugging highly efficient.

Integration with Other Siemens Tools

One of STEP 7’s greatest strengths lies in its compatibility and expandability with other Siemens automation products:

  • WinCC Flexible / WinCC Explorer:
For creating HMI or SCADA interfaces connected to the same PLC project.
  • Drive ES & Starter:
Integration with SINAMICS drives for configuration and diagnostics.
  • Automation License Manager (ALM):
Centralized license management for STEP 7 and its optional packages.
  • S7-PLCSIM:
Simulation tool that allows testing PLC logic before deploying it to real hardware.

This ecosystem ensures a comprehensive workflow from logic design to visualization and commissioning.

Typical Applications of STEP 7

STEP 7 remains the preferred choice in many industrial environments where reliability, long-term support, and hardware compatibility are key factors.
Common application areas include:

  • Oil & gas refineries
  • Power generation plants
  • Food & beverage production lines
  • Steel and cement factories
  • Water treatment facilities
  • Large-scale manufacturing systems with distributed I/O networks

These industries often run long-term automation systems that cannot easily be migrated to newer platforms — making Simatic STEP 7 a critical tool for maintenance and upgrades.

Limitations Compared to TIA Portal

Despite its reliability, STEP 7 Classic has certain limitations:

  • No direct support for S7-1200 or S7-1500 PLCs
  • Outdated graphical interface compared to TIA Portal
  • Lacks integrated safety and motion configuration
  • Limited multi-user and cloud collaboration tools

Nevertheless, Siemens continues to provide updates and security patches for STEP 7, ensuring continued usability well into the future.

System Requirements for SIMATIC STEP 7

Although STEP 7 is lightweight compared to TIA Portal, it still requires modern PC specifications for smooth performance, especially on 64-bit Windows.
Recommended setup:

  • Operating System: Windows 10 Professional / Enterprise (64-bit)
  • Processor: Intel Core i5 or higher
  • RAM Minimum: 8 GB (16 GB recommended)
  • Storage: 5 GB free disk space (SSD recommended)
  • Display: 1366×768 or higher
